Free Guide to Installing Lockdown Browser on Your Computer

What Lockdown Browser Is and Why Schools Use It

Lockdown Browser is a testing software that educational institutions use to maintain exam integrity during online assessments. Created by Respondus, a company founded in 1998, this browser restricts what students can do while taking tests. When you run Lockdown Browser, it prevents you from opening other applications, accessing websites outside the test, using copy-and-paste functions, and printing test content. The software essentially creates a controlled testing environment on your personal computer.

Schools and universities adopted Lockdown Browser widely, particularly after the shift to remote learning in 2020. According to Respondus, their software is used by over 2,000 educational institutions worldwide. Instructors choose this tool because traditional online testing has vulnerabilities—students can quickly search answers, communicate with others, or reference unauthorized materials. Lockdown Browser closes these gaps by locking down the entire computer during the exam period.

The software works with a learning management system (LMS) like Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, or Moodle. Your instructor embeds the test into these platforms, and when you click to start the exam, Lockdown Browser launches automatically and takes control of your device. Once the test ends or time expires, the browser releases its restrictions and returns your computer to normal operation.

Understanding how Lockdown Browser functions helps you prepare properly for installation and use. The software runs on both Windows and Mac computers. It requires administrative access to your device, which is why some users encounter setup challenges. Organizations that use this tool typically provide clear instructions because improper installation can prevent test-taking.

Practical takeaway: Confirm with your school or instructor whether your course requires Lockdown Browser before spending time on installation. Check your course syllabus, learning management system announcements, or contact your instructor directly to verify this requirement.

System Requirements and Compatibility Considerations

Before installing Lockdown Browser, your computer must meet specific technical requirements. The software is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, but not Linux. For Windows users, you need Windows 7 or later, including Windows 10 and Windows 11. Your computer should have at least 2 GB of RAM, though 4 GB or more is recommended for smooth operation. You also need approximately 100 MB of available hard drive space.

Mac users require OS X 10.10 or later, which includes modern versions like Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, and newer releases. Like Windows installations, Mac systems need at least 2 GB of RAM and 100 MB of storage space. Lockdown Browser does not work on tablets, Chromebooks, iPads, or smartphones. If your school requires this software and you only have a tablet or Chromebook, you will need to use a traditional laptop or desktop computer instead.

Your internet connection quality matters during exam administration. Lockdown Browser requires a stable connection throughout your test. If you experience significant internet interruptions, the software may terminate your session. Most institutions recommend having a backup internet option available—for example, a mobile hotspot or access to an alternative location with reliable Wi-Fi. Testing your connection speed beforehand helps prevent problems during actual exams.

Antivirus software and security programs sometimes conflict with Lockdown Browser. Windows Defender and Mac's built-in security typically work fine, but some third-party antivirus programs may flag the installation or block the browser's functions. If you use security software beyond your operating system's native tools, research compatibility before installation or temporarily disable it during setup if you understand the security implications.

Practical takeaway: Create a checklist of your system specifications—operating system version, RAM amount, available storage, and internet speed—before attempting installation. This prevents frustration if your device cannot support the software.

Step-by-Step Installation Process for Windows Computers

For Windows users, the installation process begins by visiting the Respondus website or accessing the installation link provided by your school. Most institutions provide direct links in their course materials or learning management systems. Navigate to the download section and select the Windows version appropriate for your system (32-bit or 64-bit). Your school's IT department or course materials should specify which version you need. If you are unsure, modern Windows computers are typically 64-bit.

Once the installer file downloads to your computer, locate the .exe file in your Downloads folder or wherever your browser saves files. Double-click the installer file to begin the setup process. Windows may display a User Account Control prompt asking if you want to allow this program to make changes to your device. Click "Yes" to proceed. This prompt appears because Lockdown Browser requires administrator-level access to function properly.

The installation wizard then opens and displays the license agreement. You must read and accept the terms to continue. The next screen asks where you want to install the software. The default location (usually C:\Program Files) works for most users. Unless you have a specific reason to choose a different location, accept the default. After selecting the installation location, click "Install" and allow the process to complete. This typically takes 1-2 minutes.

Once installation finishes, the wizard displays a completion screen. At this point, you do not need to launch Lockdown Browser yet. Wait until your instructor provides a test link within your learning management system. When you click that test link, Lockdown Browser launches automatically. Before your first actual exam, many institutions recommend testing the software with a practice exam to ensure everything works. This trial run prevents technical issues during real assessments.

Practical takeaway: Save the installation file somewhere you can locate it again, or bookmark the download page. If you need to reinstall the software or your school asks you to verify the installation, having quick access to the installer speeds up the process.

Installation Steps for Mac Computers

Mac installation follows a similar general process but uses different file formats and system dialogs. Visit the Respondus website or use the link your school provides, and select the Mac version of Lockdown Browser. The file will be a .dmg (disk image) file. Once the download completes, open your Downloads folder and double-click the .dmg file. This action mounts a virtual disk on your Mac and opens a window showing the application.

You will see the Lockdown Browser icon and an Applications folder icon in the window. Drag the Lockdown Browser icon into the Applications folder to install the software. Mac will prompt you for your administrator password. Enter your password—the same one you use to log into your Mac—and allow the installation to proceed. Once the files copy to your Applications folder, you can close the installation window and eject the virtual disk by dragging it to the Trash.

Mac operating systems from Monterey onward may display additional security warnings because Lockdown Browser is not from the official App Store. This is normal and does not indicate a problem. When you first attempt to launch Lockdown Browser from Applications, right-click the application and select "Open." Then confirm that you want to open it when prompted. This bypasses the security warning and launches the software. Subsequent launches typically do not require this extra step.

Like Windows users, Mac users should test Lockdown Browser with a practice exam before taking a graded test. This ensures the software works correctly with your specific Mac model and operating system version. If you have a newer Mac with an Apple Silicon processor (M1, M2, M3 chips), verify with your school that your version of Lockdown Browser supports it, as some older versions may have compatibility issues with Apple's newer hardware.

Practical takeaway: After installation, locate Lockdown Browser in your Applications folder and create a shortcut to your Desktop. This makes it easy to find and test before your exam date, rather than hunting through Applications each time.

Troubleshooting Common Installation Problems

Installation failures sometimes occur due to conflicts with security software, insufficient administrator privileges, or corrupted downloads. If the installer refuses to run on Windows, try right-clicking the .exe file and selecting "Run as Administrator." This ensures the installer has the necessary permissions. If you see error messages about administrator access, you may need to contact your school's IT help desk, as your device may have restricted settings that prevent software installation.

Users occasionally encounter conflicts with antivirus software. Windows Defender usually allows Lockdown Browser without issues, but third-party security programs sometimes interfere. If installation fails or the browser crashes immediately after launching, try temporarily disabling your antivirus software during installation. Only do this if you trust the Respondus website and your school's
